Start Early! Spring Tree Care Checklist for Denver Homeowners

Although this weekend is supposed to bring artic temperatures in Denver, now is a good time to start thinking about Spring time, as the winter will once again start to fade. So now is the time to start planning and preparing your yard for the growing season. Your yard can recover on its own, but you’ll see more success during the growing season and have more vibrant trees and plants if you give it a little TLC before the temperatures warm up completely. Here are a few simple tasks that your tree care team wants you to take care of once the snow melts away.

Clean Up Your Yard
Even after winters with light snowfall and moderate winds, Denver yards will be covered in debris. Fallen leaves, broken twigs, and other plant material can litter your yard and make it look disheveled and unkempt. Though leaving the debris isn’t always harmful, it’s always a good idea to clean it up as best you can. If there’s enough debris in your yard, it can trap moisture and lead to mold and fungus growth that can spread to your trees. Cleaning it up will allow the soil to dry out and reduce the risk of fungal growth in your yard.

Water Your Trees
After your trees start to wake up from their winter dormancy, they’ll need plenty of water to kick the growing season off. Start watering your trees once the ground thaws. Water them deeply but make sure not to overwater them, especially if they’re young. Your tree care team can help you determine an appropriate watering schedule.

Spread Fresh Mulch
Mulch is a wonderful way to protect your trees during the winter, but the constant exposure to the elements can cause it to break down. While this is good for the soil, it does mean you’ll need to replace the mulch every once in a while. For most homeowners, replacing it once per year, usually in the spring, is a good choice.

Schedule a Routine Inspection
Just because your trees don’t look damaged when spring rolls around doesn’t mean they’re not struggling. The sooner you can identify possible issues with your trees, the easier it will be to resolve them so they can thrive during the growing season. Schedule a routine inspection with your plant health specialist and let them assess the condition of your trees.

If everything is in good shape, they can advise you on how best to prepare your trees for spring. However, if they identify issues, they’ll also be able to develop a treatment plan to help your trees recover as best they can. If any of your trees need to be removed, they can help with that, too.

Get Your Yard Ready for Spring
Getting your yard ready for spring doesn’t have to be a challenge, but it can be time-consuming. Instead of feeling like you’re guessing what you need to do, follow this simple checklist. As long as you take your time and give your trees the proper care and attention they need, they’ll be ready for the growing season once it comes around.
